Expecting a Friday Round-Up, were ya? Lo siento. I’ve been MIA for like two weeks straight (a special announcement pertaining to that is coming) and then just when you think you’re gonna get some links, I pull the rug out from underneath you and then I ride that rug into the horizon like Jasmine.
I had the pleasure of hosting six of my nearest and dearest college friends over Labor Day weekend and now I’m suffering from a case of the blues. Just a little rain cloud above my head all week; nothing tornadic or even anvil-shaped. More like a greyish nimbus.
And it’s because my weekend was so incredibly fun. These ladies and I were on the same page all weekend. That’s what happens when you’ve lived and traveled together for as long as we have. It’s just….easy. No pressure to catch up on every little thing we’ve missed. We pick up where we left off.
Previous reunions took place in Santa Barbara and Las Vegas so far.
Over Labor Day weekend, we were finally able to get (most) of the group together for our big 2013 reunion at my place in Chicago. Mike was busy canoeing the waterways between Canada and Minnesota for the week, so I had just enough space for the seven of us in my apartment.
Some highlights from the weekend:
1) An architecture cruise that started with blue skies and ended with a thunderstorm
Tom Skilling (local meteorologist/media darling) lied so many lies, directly to my face. There was supposed to be less than a 10% chance of isolated thunderstorms on Friday. Instead, we were chased off the river by what can only be described as a pseudo-tornado. Green skies. Lightning bolts. Sheets of rain. Luckily, the architecture cruise’s on-ship bar was selling ponchos for $2 a pop, so we’re all set for New York Fashion Week.
2) Swimming in Lake Michigan
Nobody believes it’s a lake when they rest their peepers on it for the first time. I totally get it because it’s a huge bleepin’ lake. It’s just one of those Chicago things you get used to, like potholes that can swallow a bicyclist and roving packs of urban coyotes. It’s a thing, look it up.
But yet again, Tom Skilling spat in all of our eyes because Saturday was supposed to be our beach day. Instead, we woke to yet another downpour. Unfazed, we slept until the rains subsided and moseyed down to the beach post-storm. We had the place mostly to ourselves, which never happens, let alone on a holiday weekend. Take that, Mr. Un-Skilled-ing.
3) A trip to Second City
Oh, we laughed and laughed and then laughed some more.
4) Board game night
Some people partied in college. We stayed in, made vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, played games, successfully pulled off several international artwork heists at small- to mid-sized European art museums, and learned all the steps to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” video. Only one of those things isn’t true and you have to guess which one.
Of course, we occasionally ventured outside of our apartment in college, and we still do. We spent Friday night contracting boogey fever at the dance clubs. The cure? You’ve got to boogey down.
But by the time Sunday rolled around, it was time for an old-fashioned board game-a-thon. It involved uproarious laughter and only one fistfight, so we’re slowly getting better at playing with others.
I took no photos of board game night (get it together, Larsen) so instead, here are some more photos of the trip.
