Today’s guest blogger is a college pal of mine (and a seriously fantastic human being) who I became close to while studying abroad in Australia. I stayed at Steph’s current, adorable apartment in Boston’s North End this past February and so, I’ve seen her favorite thing firsthand. It’s a keeper! I had no idea about its interesting backstory until now. Enjoy! – Jorie
Steph’s Favorite Thing: Her Grandfather’s Wooden Bureau
Before we get down to business, here are a few things that you should know about me:
1. I have lots of “stuff.” It’s not just clothes that fill my room. You can currently find hundreds of books, photos, blank art canvases and perhaps an old fro wig from when I was Scary Spice hidden in my room. I’m not a pack rat. I am just always prepared.
2. I love blogs. From home design to cooking to Mormon Mommy blogs, I love ‘em all.
3. I am very sentimental.
These three facts led me to photograph my bureau at 10 pm last night (sorry for the bad lighting!). The bureau was made by my grandfather and stood in my grandparent’s house for as long as I can remember. Before I got my hands on it it was a dark stained wood that looked almost green. Not really my jam, but when free furniture is offered to you, you take it. I was really hesitant at first and wanted my first non-dormitory room to be perfect.
So my mom and I took brushes to it and painted it all white. I then slowly started adding fun Anthropologie knobs. Mind you, 10 knobs at once was not in my budget. Now? I love this bureau. Sure, it needs to be touched up, but It’s large enough to hide a lot of my junk and have space on top to work with.
In middle school I wanted a vanity more than anything. Now I am happy to have all my makeup wrangled into one organizer on top. And another Anthropologie find keeps my necklaces organized on either side of my mirror. You might also point out that there are masquerade masks hanging on my lamp. Again, I am always prepared for any theme party.
The bureau also was my first real DIY project. Since then I have painted/spray painted a bed frame, chest of drawers and wine cart. I feel like Sherry from Young House Love. I actually get excited to go through paint chips! Finally, the bureau always reminds me of my grandfather. And I really like that.
