Friday Round-Up: January 4, 2013

Enjoy your weekends, and also, these links:

- Six Habits of Remarkably Likable People. So that’s how they do it.

What Your Favorite Musical Says About You. This was spot-on with my two favs, West Side Story and Chicago. What can I say? I’m a sucker for synchronized snapping and the Jazz Age.

- The annoying vocal tic plaguing young American women: vocal fry, commonly known as creaky voice. Slate’s on the case. (Links to a podcast)

A wild fox who plays fetch?! WHERE CAN I GET ONE. (Seriously.) (No, really, I’m not kidding.) (My birthday’s in April.) (Okay, I’m done.)

- The 20 Most Beautiful Bookstores in the World.

- Whoaaa: a new study suggests that language learning may begin in utero. Anyone see the latest “Modern Family” episode where Gloria sings to her fetus? She’s ahead of the curve.

- Let’s gets motivated, shall we? 12 Motivational Quotes for 2013. (Thanks, Amy!)

- And now: a dog trying to walk in mitten booties. We got these for my childhood dogs, and much like this video, hilarity ensued. (Thanks, Krista)

  1. always entertaining – thanks for putting it together

  2. Shari says:

THOSE BOOKSTORES! I now want to travel to every single one!

  3. She’s baaaack! Thanks Jorie!

  4. Rachel Larsen says:

Love that shiba inu’s socks! So funny! What is he doing with that back leg?? lol

  5. Those bookstores really are beautiful. Visiting bookstores while on vacation is one of my VERY FAVORITE things to do. Marty and I have been to Powell’s in Portland, 826 Valencia in San Fran, The Strand in NYC and Elliot Bay Book Company in Seattle; I am looking forward to adding to this our list (there is one in Washington I really want to visit) and maybe even adding one from this 20 Beautiful Around the World list. :) Have you been to any worthwhile bookstores worth visiting? Do share!

    • Jorie says:

Di, that sounds so amazing! I love popping in bookstores on my travels, but I must say, none that are architecturally remarkable. Just old and musty and definitely well-loved. One of my favorite book shops was this rundown, secondhand store around the corner from my dorm in Sydney called Sappho Books. I still have a very raggedy bookmark from there. I should make it more of a point to see a unique bookstore in each place I visit. That’s a terrific idea!

  6. Suzie says:

The six habits was interesting and very true. Loved the fox and the dog with the mittens, I’m so posting that one on Facebook! Last one I posted of yours was the puppy and the doorstop :) Have a great weekend Jorie!!

  7. Veronica says:

No amount of cheeseball is too much for me! I guess I can’t take offense, I mean, Phantom is my favorite musical. I loooove it. lol. Also, I want that fox for Christmas too. We might have to wrestle for it.

    • Jorie says:

Hahaha, that article certainly was sassy about a few of those musicals. I’m such a sucker for pretty much all musicals — and I feel like they are all corny, and that’s part of the reason why we love ‘em. So keep on loving Phantom!

And I will do joint custody over the fox with you — every other Wednesday, weekends, and holidays.

  8. I want to live in that bookstore in Portugal! I gotta say-I was highly offended by the musical things. My favorite is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and that author was not very nice about it ;) !

    • Jorie says:

Hahaha, Natalie, that is my boyfriend’s dad’s faaaavorite musical, so Mike was like, “We better not show this article to my dad.” Mike was raised on a steady diet of old-timey musicals so he defends Seven Brides for Seven Brothers too. I still have yet to see it, so I can’t weigh in!

  9. Kate says:

That article basically made me realise I desperately love ALL musicals. Favourite.

    • Jorie says:

I’m with you, Kate! I want to live in a world where we spontaneously burst into song and perform complicated choreography at a moment’s notice.
